Avon Launches First Municipal Polystyrene Recycling Program in Colorado![]() The program accepts clean and white packaging foam from: • Televisions • Appliances • Computers (electronics) • Furniture • Foam coolers Only clean and dry foam is accepted—no dirt, labels, or tape. When in doubt, throw it out! Items not accepted include: • Packing peanuts • Egg cartons • Foam food trays and other containers (already banned in Colorado) • Colored foam (important—white only!) • Insulation foam panels • Flexible or film foam This is the first municipal polystyrene recycling program in Colorado, distinguishing it from existing private, paid programs. “Avon continues to prioritize sustainability initiatives and is proud to be leading the efforts towards polystyrene recycling in Colorado,” said Avon Mayor Tamra Nottingham Underwood. Recycling foam is an excellent example of a circular economy, with the recycled foam being turned into picture frames and building insulation materials. The Town of Avon is committed to making recycling comprehensive and accessible for all residents, while further strengthening our commitment to Avon’s Recycling Ordinance. The Town wants to remind users to review the signage in place to ensure proper recycling protocols are used. Harrington’s Penstemon Hike![]() As residents and visitors to Eagle County flip the calendar from May to June, many start to feel the excitement of a particular season: Colorado wildflower season! Town of Avon not only celebrates outstanding trails and locales to view wildflowers, but our region’s ecosystem offers individuals a chance to see several types of flowers that only grow in Colorado, including the Harrington’s Penstemon. Penstemons, also known as beardtongues, represent a common plant genus found across North America. These tall, bright perennials grow well in sun-exposed areas, attract pollinators like bees and hummingbirds, and stabilize soils. Penstemon are lauded for their ability to grow with minimal water, making them a wise choice to include in water-conscious landscapes. Colorado claims sixty-two native species of penstemon however, one in particular can only be found locally. The Harrington’s Penstemon is an elusive bloom with a distinct, bluish color, but if you’re not sure how to spot one, please join ethnobotanist and local historian Lynn Albers, with the Eagle Valley Land Trust (ELVT), and the Town of Avon for the 2025 Harrington’s Penstemon Guided Hike at the West Avon Preserve. The hike will provide opportunities to share knowledge about wildflowers and the sagebrush environment on our south-facing slopes, and highlight the beauty and value of our local wildflower species. When: Monday, June 23, 2025 from 9:00 to 11:00am Where: West Avon Preserve in Avon, CO – O’Neal Spur Park, near the Wildridge Dog Park The hike is free and open to the public, but space is limited. Those interested can REGISTER FOR THE EVENT HERE. The link also includes a map to the meeting location. If you have any questions about the Harrington’s Penstemon Guided Hike event, or water-wise landscapes in general, please contact Max Morgan (mmorgan@avon.org) in the Town’s Community Development Department. We hope to see you there! For more information on events with EVLT: https://evlt.org/join-us/events/ |

Bears are Awake!![]() Bears are a BIG part of the Avon community and seen regularly in and around town. While they are exciting and interesting animals, bears need humans to be good neighbors in the spaces we share so that everyone stays safe. Residents, visitors, businesses, and property owners should know that bears belong here, but not in your trash can or dumpster, and there are several steps and best practices that ensure bears and people have minimal, negative interactions. This includes: • Proper food and trash disposal • Keeping outdoor dining areas and your driveway clean • Landscaping and gardening to reduce bear attractants • Supervising pets • And never approach a bear These tips are a few of many included in the new NeighBEARhood Ambassador campaign provided by our partners at Eagle County. Anyone can be a NeighBEARhood Ambassador if they take the pledge and commit to a few easy practices and habits that help protect people and bears. Bears need our help, but not our food. Take the pledge today! The Avon Police Department should be contacted if the animal is in a trash can, is in close proximity to a house, is near children, or appears to be a threat to domestic animals. For more information, contact the Avon Police Department at 970-748-4040. |
